Matthew Brun

I am a third-year PhD student at the MIT Operations Research Center, advised by Dr. Andy Sun. My work focuses on the intersection of nonlinear and discrete optimization, with applications in energy systems. Currently, I am working on optimization problems related to the power grid, including analysis and mitigation of wildfire impact. In summer 2024, I joined Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory for a summer internship in the Cyber & Critical Infrastructure Summer Institute.

Previously, I graduated from Rice University in 2022 with a BA in Operations Research. I have worked on manufacturing optimization projects in industry at Chevron and ORTEC. For fun, I play trumpet and have performed with the MIT Symphony Orchestra, Rice’s Campanile Orchestra and Mariachi Luna Llena.
